TEMPO Concert Series!
A new series of “occasional” concerts of early music—music of the baroque, early classical, renaissance, and medieval periods in Europe—will make its debut this Fall with a concert featuring the Montreal-based Ensemble Caprice, on Saturday, October 20th at 7:30 pm in First Presbyterian Church of Durham, 305 E. Main Street in downtown Durham. The program will include works for recorders and traverso, viola da gamba and harpsichord from Spain, Germany, Italy and France.
The second concert will be on Sunday, November 25th at 3:00 pm, also at First Presbyterian Church in Durham, and will feature music for baroque trumpets, organ and percussion, with The Clarino Consort, including works by Handel, Telemann, and Charpentier.
The two fall concerts are presented by TEMPO (Triangle Early Music Presenting Organization) in conjunction with First Presbyterian Church’s “Music on Main” concerts.
Admission for each of the first two concerts will be $16 general public, $10 students, cash or check only at the door. Advance reservations are not required.
Winter and spring concerts will include Aurora Baroque on February 17th at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Durham, and Music from the Salem Collegium on June 19, in cooperation with the Magnolia Baroque Festival (of Winston-Salem), at a Durham venue to be announced.
The TEMPO organization and series are founded by Kathy Silbiger, who recently retired as director of Duke Performances. Ms. Silbiger and members of the TEMPO advisory group believe that the Triangle has an audience for a professional-level early music series, such as exists in other similar metro areas, e.g., Seattle, Vancouver, Milwaukee, Indianapolis. TEMPO plans to partner with area churches and other small venues that are acoustically appropriate for chamber music performed on period instruments.
